29 czerwca, o godzinie 13:00, w sali 11 w budynku Instytutu Filologii Angielskiej (Kuźnicza 22) odbędzie się kolejny wykład w cyklu American Philosophy and Culture. Matteo Johannes Stettler wygłosi wystąpienie pt. "Thoreau's Stoicism in Letters to a Spiritual Seeker: the Spiritual Direction of Harrison Blake" [abstrakt ENG] [wyciąg z wykładu ENG]. Wydarzenie jest organizowane przez Instytut Filozofii, Centrum Badań Interdyscyplinarnych i Filozofii Kultury oraz Instytut Filologii Angielskiej UWr.

Matteo Stettler is a former Master (MA) and Research Master (ReMA) student at the Institute of Philosophy of KU Leuven (Belgium), Matteo’s early research interest was dominated by an irresistible fascination for American thought and aesthetics: especially, Dewey’s experiential pragmatism, and Thoreau, Emerson and Whitman’s Transcendentalism. A former member of the Thoreau Society of Concord, he was eventually introduced to the works of Pierre Hadot and Michel Foucault’s on ancient spirituality, which now constitutes the central axis of all his metaphilosophical reflections and investigations on antiquity. A staunch supporter of Modern Stoicism, Matteo has now been awarded the Deakin University Postgraduate Scholarship (DUPRS) to pursue his doctoral studies at Deakin University (Australia), under the supervision of Prof. Matthew Sharpe. He is also a researcher affiliated with the Philosophy and the History of Ideas (PHI) research team of the Alfred Deakin Institute (ADI).
His current research aims at unveiling the reception of Aristotle’s lost Protrepticus in the early Christian tradition (Minucius Felix, Lactantius, Augustine, up to Boethius) as a fundamental chapter in the history of spirituality. Matteo has published specialistic articles for Classical Receptions and Philosophy Today (co-authored with Prof. Sharpe), as well as essays, book reviews, and translations for a variety of non-specialistic journals and magazines.

Cykl wykładów American Philosophy and Culture ma na celu wsparcie międzynarodowego dialogu i badań nad klasyczną filozofią amerykańską, taką jak pragmatyzm (i warianty neopragmatyzmu), transcendentalizm oraz personalizm, a także nad innymi tradycjami wywodzącymi się z amerykańskiej myśli i kultury lub z nimi związanymi. W ramach cyklu Wrocław odwiedzą światowej sławy badacze i badaczki, którzy wygłoszą wykłady poruszające zagadnienia z różnorodnych subdyscyplin filozoficznych: od filozofii nauki, przez filozofię polityki i etykę do estetyki, metafilozofii i filozofii wypowiadającej się na temat istotnych bieżących zagadnień (public philosophy). Koordynatorem serii jest Dr Eli Orner Karmer z Zakładu Etyki Instytutu Filozofii Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego.
